DNA properties: strand polarity, base pairing, Chargaff rule, and melting
This video explains what the 5' and 3' ends of DNA are, it teaches you how to recognize the DNA bases, how the DNA strands pair to form the double helix, how to understand Chargaff rule and to solve problems connected to it, and finally the process of DNA melting, i.e. denaturation, and separation of the DNA strands.

This video introduces the ways through which bacteria share DNA, explains conjugation of plasmids, and the fate of DNA once in the recipient bacterial cell: replication, recombination, or loss.
Heritability and selection in breeding

The video explains the meaning of narrow sense heritability (h^2), its derivation and use.
The complementation test
Просмотров 35 тыс.6 лет назад
This video explains why geneticists cross two mutants to determine if they are allelic, i.e. in the same gene. It explains the genetic and molecular basis of this test.
Sex determination by the Y chromosome
Просмотров 35 тыс.6 лет назад
This video will teach you how chromosome Y determines maleness in mammals. It covers studies with aneuploids, Y chromosome translocation, and the transgenic analysis of SRY. It also compares sex determination in mammals and fruit fly.
Sex determination: X-inactivation
Просмотров 10 тыс.6 лет назад
This video explains why one X chromosome is inactivated in females of mammals, how it happens during embryogenesis and what are the consequences. Did you know that you can count X chromosomes in a cell by looking at Barr bodies? It also explains why a calico cat has orange and black fur patches.

I can not thank you enough for this video.

    Respected sir, I need the answer f below question. No one know the answer if you know please give its answer. (Your company has a highly successful tomato cultivar. It is a hybrid between two inbred lines that you developed. Recent years, a cultivar similar to the hybrid cultivar emerged. The seed are very cheap, and the market f your cultivar started to dwindle. Sine it is a hybrid and you thought that the cultivar is well protected from thieves. However, the cultivar from the other company has no phenotypic differences from your cultivar. You started to think that the other company stole your cultivar. How will you collet the data before you sue the company? Be sure that your data are reliable and your logic has no flaw. Otherwise, judge will not rule in favor of your company. )

    If the occurance of round pod shape is 3/4 and wrinkled pod shape is 1/4 Then, how total no of pods in a plant will be 5?

    • @Genetics101
      @Genetics101 2 года назад

      The probability of an event and how many tests you carry out are not related. The p of rolling 1 from a 6-face die is 1/6. You may roll the die once, twice, thrice and so on. The p of 1 for each roll is the same: 1/6. The fact that the pod has 5 seeds does not affect the p for each seed: 3/4 for the dominant phenotype, 1/4 for the recessive. You can derive the empirical probability if you carry out many tests. For example, if you roll a die 1000 times, you should obtain close to 166 instances of 1, or 1/6.

    Could you please explain to me why the P of D unlinked to M is 0.25^5 at 3:22?

    • @Genetics101
      @Genetics101 3 года назад

      D is the dominant allele for the disease condition. Let's call the M (marker) alleles M1 and M2. Remember that in each mating we are dealing with the probability of gametes from one parent, the carrier. The other parent is typically irrelevant because the disease condition is rare. In the absence of linkage, the P of a gamete with a given combination of alleles, such as D M1, from Dd M1M2 is 0.25. This is because the P of a D gamete is 0.5. Same for the P of an M1 gamete. Thus, 0.5 x 0.5 = 0.25. P of 0.25 is the same for each mating in the pedigree.
